About This Event

On 10 October 2026, the Parish Centre - Church of Mary Immaculate in Letterkenny will host Ceardlann Filíochta le Dubhán Ó Longáin. This workshop is led by award-winning poet Dubhán Ó Longáin and caters to both beginners and experienced writers interested in Irish poetry. Participants can expect guidance on writing techniques suitable for all skill levels, with a ticket price of £25.11. The event runs at 10:00 and welcomes those eager to explore or refine their poetic craft through the Irish language.

A poetry workshop through Irish with award-winning poet Dubhán Ó Longáin, suitable for beginners and for those already writing.

Ceardlann é seo atá fóirsteanach do thosaitheoirí agus do dhaoine a bhfuil píosaí scríofa acu cheana. Amharcfar ar achan ghné de scríobh na filíochta sa cheardlann seo, ó spreagadh (nó cad a ba chóir a dhéanamh nuair nach bhfuil sin ann), go scríobh, go heagarthóireacht. Beidh seans ag na rannpháirtithe dánta agus línte a scríobh agus an tuiscint atá acu ar an rud is filíocht ann a phlé.

Cumfar dánta agus línte filíochta ar dhóigheanna éagsúla agus pléifear tionchar thimpeallacht an scríbhneora mar aon leis an tionchar a imríonn ceol agus léitheoireacht ar an bhfile.

English

This workshop suits both beginners and those who already have work on the page. It covers every aspect of writing poetry, from inspiration (and what to do when it is nowhere to be found) through drafting to editing. Participants will write poems and lines of their own, and discuss what poetry means to them.

The session looks at different ways of composing, at how a writer’s surroundings shape the work, and at the influence music and reading have on a poet.

Lunch is included.

The workshop runs mostly in Irish, but participants are welcome to write in English if they prefer.

Limited spaces. Just 12 seats. Please book early.

About the Frances Browne Literary Festival

The Frances Browne Literary Festival celebrates the life and legacy of Frances Browne (1816 to 1879), the "Blind Poetess of Ulster". Rooted in her hometown of Ballybofey-Stranorlar, Co. Donegal, the festival brings together poets, writers, musicians and communities from Ireland and beyond to share in her spirit of creativity, inclusion and multilingual expression.

Frances Browne is the most important writer to emerge from Donegal’s Finn Valley. Her masterpiece, the children’s storybook Granny’s Wonderful Chair, was a bestseller all over the world, but she also deserves to be remembered for her unswerving opposition to slavery and all sorts of injustice. The festival works to bring Frances’s writing and astonishing life story to new generations, and to celebrate contemporary writers who continue in her tradition.
