Visit Dolbelydr, near Denbigh, a fine example of a 16th-century gentry house with The Landmark Trust.

Free to visit Open Days are an opportunity to see inside this important local landmark in Denbighshire and learn more about its history and restoration. Information on the building's history will be available for adults and families in Welsh and English.

Dolbelydr (pronounced 'Doll bell i deer') has good claim to be the birthplace of modern Welsh - it was here that Henry Salesbury wrote his Grammatica Britannica, the first Welsh grammar.

Pre-booking is preferred but drop in's on the day are welcome.

Donating to the Landmark Trust

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to visit a Landmark for free as part of our Open Day programme, and as such we’re pleased to continue to offer free entry at all our Open Days in 2025.

The Landmark Trust is a building conservation charity that relies on donations to support its work. Over the past 60 years, public support has helped us rescue over 200 historic buildings and make them available for all to experience and enjoy. Your support by attending our events, booking a workshop, and making a donation allows us to continue to save buildings at risk and continue to maintain those already in our care. Your donation could help train the craftspeople needed to restore a future Landmark, offer opportunities for young people to experience history first-hand, or provide a charity with free Landmark stay for their service users through our 50 for Free scheme.

Finding us

Dolbelydr can be a little tricky to find - please follow these directions and look out for Open Day signage:

Take the A55 from Chester, then take the A525 Denbigh turn off. After approximately half a mile, just after entering the outskirts of St Asaph, turn left at the mini roundabout (by the Cathedral) and continue on the A525 to Trefnant.

At the traffic lights in Trefnant village turn right on to the B5428 signposted Henllan.

(If travelling from Denbigh on the A525 turn left at the traffic lights in Trefnant village on to the B5428)

Follow the B5428 road over a small crossroads and continue for about another half mile. On the left is a gateway and a small lodge and immediately after, on the right, is the entrance to Bryn Wgan Farm (a BRYN WGAN sign is attached to the right gate pillar of the entrance).

Turn right down this private lane and follow it until just before you reach the farmyard. The access track to Dolbelydr is through the gate on your right opposite a large oak tree.

Follow the track through two further gates and then down the steep hill, through another gate half way down, to Dolbelydr.

Turn left through the next gate just past the end of the house.

Please note, parking is limited on site.

The nearest railway station is Rhyl, about 10 miles away. Frequent buses run from Rhyl to Trefnant, contact Tourist Information for more details.

Accessibility

There are some narrow and steep stairs on site, with a long gated access track to get to the property. Also note that several internal doorways have raised thresholds and low headroom.

Well bahaved dogs are welcome on a lead.
