Part of the BFI's "Rip it Up" season, Theatreship is proud to host a series of screenings celebrating the changing face of youth rebellion. In this season we dive into the youth driven movements which have defined our cultural identity, the agonies and ecstasies of growing up in Britain, and the issues facing the next generation. For this event we are screening "How to have Sex", a bold coming-of-age film that captures the messy reality of growing up in modern Britain. Set against a chaotic holiday in Greece, it blends friendship, partying and vulnerability with an unfiltered sense of realism. Its impact has cemented it as a distinctive and important voice in contemporary British cinema.

How to Have Sex (2023) is a sharp, atmospheric coming-of-age drama that follows three friends on a holiday in Greece. What begins as an escape filled with parties, drinking and late nights gradually becomes a more complicated experience as friendships shift and the excitement of being away from home starts to wear off.

Directed by Molly Manning Walker, the film captures the energy and uncertainty of youth with an unfiltered sense of realism. Funny, uncomfortable and deeply observant, How to Have Sex offers a fresh take on the British coming-of-age film. Its honest portrayal of teenage friendship and holiday culture has made it a notable addition to contemporary British cinema.

The film will be followed by a screening of short film documetnary "Between Two Worlds". This documentary follows Lila as she uncovers the story of her mother, Rachel, who grew up immersed in the New Age Traveller movement. Raised by her single mother, Jean, Rachel spent her childhood living in a Tipi, embracing a nomadic lifestyle that defied conventional norms. In 1991, at just 13, Rachel’s extraordinary upbringing was captured in a BBC documentary, and now, 30 years later, this film revisits that story, weaving archival footage from the original BBC documentary with present-day reflections. Rachel returns to the places of her youth, exploring how her unconventional childhood shaped her identity and her complex relationship with her mother. By following three generations of women in one family, the documentary delves into the echoes of generational trauma, examining how the past continues to shape family, identity, and the bonds between mothers and daughters.
