Brixton's Black Herstory: Sisterhood, Solidarity and Resistance

Join Lambeth Tour Guide Rebecca for a 2 hour walking tour celebrating the extraordinary legacies of Brixton’s Black women. Beginning on Railton Road, near Herne Hill Station, this inspiring journey uncovers stories of sisterhood, activism, creativity, and community resistance. Discover the lives of trailblazers including Claudia Jones, legendary community activist and squatter Olive Morris, and Black Panther leader Althea Jones-Lecointe, whose courage, vision and determination helped shape modern Britain.

Along the way, explore the rich cultural heritage of Brixton through figures such as pioneering pianist Winifred Atwell and artist Pearl Alcock, whose home became a cherished refuge for the Black queer Londoners. The tour concludes in Windrush Square reflecting on the sites, stories, and monuments that celebrate Black women's enduring struggles—and achievements—in the pursuit of justice, equality, and inclusion.
