The heritage walking tour covers spaces and locations in the City of London and East London with a unique combination of direct and indirect links and interactions with Bengal for five centuries (1500-2000).

It covers the stories of:

Ralph Fitch, the first Englishman in Bengal (1586-1588)

Nutmeg imports and Bengali slave labour in the Dutch-controlled Banda archipelago in the Malukus (1625-1700)

Josiah Child’s Anglo-Moghul war and the attempted conquest of Chittagong in Bengal (1688/9)

Bengali textiles and Jute (17th-19th centuries)

Lascars, seamen and the growing presence of Sylheti Bengalis (1850-1950).

The walk provides evidence-based, focused information with an opportunity for interactivity.

The tour starts outside 74 Leman Street, the site of the old police station, then walks to Fenchurch Street, then to Leadenhall Street, and ends on the opposite side of Liverpool Street. There are several stops along the way where examples of each link are provided and discussed. There will be facts, figures and images to illustrate the links and their significance.
