About Franz & Marie

Franz & Marie at The Arches, London is a stage musical set in the twisted world of late 19th Century European folklore. It follows Franz Woyzeck, a young soldier stationed at an isolated outpost after action on the front line, haunted by nightmares and hallucinations as he tries to hold his life together.

The story centres on Franz’s devotion to his girlfriend Marie and their baby, Georgie. With no leave during the war and no chance to marry, he works to provide for them while living with the psychological strain of his return from the front.

Franz & Marie reimagines Georg Büchner’s classic German tragedy Woyzeck as a folk musical with indie raw folk music. Originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom and created by members of The Singing Loins, it has been adapted for the stage with a 14-strong cast of actor-musicians.
