Selected for the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2026, Charlotte's drawing, Medicine, 2025, cut painted & printed papers, 142 x 164cm, is one of a series of works that relate to her current project, Women Portraits; Trades & Professions, which is engaged with the representation of trades and professions manifested as portraits of women. They celebrate the often-invisible contribution that women have made to many trades and professions that have hitherto been historically associated with men while women have been portrayed as ideals within arts and culture, as muses or as objects of beauty. In making these works she has substituted the pencil for the intricate cut line made using a scalpel. Each portrait, and in this case Medicine, proposes an alternative representation of women identified through the tools associated with each specific trade or profession. The representation of Medicine is through the image of the caring hand, gloved, alongside medical tools such as the stethoscope and surgical needles. The importance placed on the image of the hand directly references the hand-made aspect of my papercuts, as well as The Hospital Drawings of Barbara Hepworth and the poem These are the Hands by Michael Rosen.

Anita Taylor is an artist, curator and educator. She is the founding Director of the annual international Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize [since 1994], and Drawing Projects UK, a public-facing initiative dedicated to drawing and contemporary arts [since 2009].

The Girl Friday Breakfast Club was established by Professors Kate Reynolds and Anita Taylor in 2018 to provide a friendly and informal space for women to meet and to hear from an interesting woman speaker, eat breakfast and drink great coffee or tea together at Drawing Projects UK on the last Friday of each month.

This event will not be recorded, so do book to join in - pastries and juice will be available. Coffee maybe purchased at nearby cafes. Please note this event will take place in the exhibition in the Buoy Store at Trinity Buoy Wharf and limited seating will be available.

All women, and those who identify as women, are very welcome to join the Girl Friday Breakfast Club.

We look forward to welcoming you!
