Join us for an in conversation event with Karishma Jobanputra and playwright Hannah Doran. They will be discussing Karishma's debut novel, The Body of the Thing, as well as all things writing, and how to captivate an audience with words.

A lyrical and visceral short story collection, The Body of the Thing unpicks the hierarchies that thrum under our relationships, from first loves and lusts to motherhood and miscarriages, from sexual awakenings to final confrontations with death. Traversing bougie neighbourhoods in Manhattan, sun-drenched piazzas in Italy, coastal Maine, and the bustle of London, these stories chase the fallout when women’s bodies are valued for their beauty and youth, dismissed and discarded when ill, or made useful as parents and caregivers. Fluid, sensual, and fearless, The Body of the Thing is about looking at and living as a woman – and all of its complicated realities and wonders.Karishma Jobanputra is a British-Indian writer currently based in London. Her work has been listed for the Brick Lane Short Story Prize and the Disquiet Literary Prize for Fiction. The Body of the Thing is her first book.Hannah Doran is a British-Irish playwright and screenwriter. Her debut play The Meat Kings! (Inc.) of Brooklyn Heights won the 2024 Papatango Prize and the 2026 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. She was also nominated at the 2026 Critics' Circle Awards for Most Promising Playwright.
