Edward Young will present an introduction to scheme theory at the Junior Geometry Seminar on 9 October 2026. The talk addresses counterintuitive aspects of the Zariski topology and demonstrates how to produce a rich geometric theory through examples. Snacks will be provided before and after the session, which takes place at the Huxley Building in London.
Title: What they don’t tell you about schemes Speaker: Edward Young Abstract: I will give an introduction to scheme theory. We will see that the Zariski topology, very natural to an algebraist, has some rather counterintuitive quirks: open sets are dense and compact, nothing is Hausdorff, and there are more points and data than we know what to do with. In a series of examples, we will see how to tame some of these difficulties to produce a rich geometric theory. Some snacks will be provided before and after the talk. Go to the seminar main page.
