The Mathematical Physics Seminar on 28 October 2026 at the Huxley Building in South Kensington will be presented by Ginestra Bianconi. The talk, titled 'Gravity from Entropy', will discuss a theory that derives gravity from a coupling of matter fields and spacetime geometry, introducing a new physical field associated with an emergent positive cosmological constant.
Title: Gravity from Entropy Abstract: Gravity from Entropy (GfE) is a recently proposed theory deriving gravity from the GfE action coupling matter fields and spacetime geometry [1]. The fundamental idea is to associate the Lorentzian treat the spacetime metrics as quantum operators. The GfE Lagrangian is given by a novel Geometric Quantum Relative Entropy (GQRE) between the spacetime metric and the metric induced by matter fields and curvature. In doing so the GfE theory elevates the interplay between matter and geometry as the fundamental aspect of gravity to be reflected in its statistical mechanics and information theory action (the GfE action). The resulting modified Einstein equations recover General Relativity with vanishing cosmological constant in the low-coupling regime. The theory introduces a new physical field, the G-field, associated with an emergent positive cosmological constant, while preserving second-order field equations. Its extension, Λ-Gravity from Entropy (ΛGfE) [2], includes both a constant and a dynamical dark-energy contribution, with potential implications for cosmological tensions. The GfE framework also provides a first-principles derivation of the area law associated to the Schwarzschild metric [3]. Moreover, the thermodynamics of the GgE cosmology is consistent with the second law of thermodynamics while admits a decreasing GQRE, potentially providing insights into the emergence of non-uniform structures [4]. These results open new perspectives for investigating gravity, cosmology, and the dark sector within the GfE field-theoretic framework, whose quantization might provide further insights into quantum gravity.
