Nigel Smith and Jane Giles will discuss London's film culture at Owl Bookshop in London on 15 October 2026 at 17:30. Admission costs from £7.
Nigel Smith and Jane Giles will discuss what makes London such a wonderful city for those of us who love film and shine a light on some of the well-known venues and hidden gems that are highlighted in the book. Here’s looking at you, London. From Art Deco picture palaces to behind-the-scenes tours and cult movie nights, the capital plays host to a blockbuster line-up of cinematic attractions. This unashamedly opinionated guide pulls back the curtain on the city’s dazzling movie scene. Pass the popcorn. Nigel Smith is a tour guide who specialises in the history of cinemas and cinema-going in London and the creator of Memory Palaces, a website that explores the topic through photographs and stories. He’s also the co-founder of the long-running Tufnell Park Film Club and part of the team that produces Screenshot for BBC Radio 4. Jane Giles is a London-based writer and filmmaker who also worked for many years in cinema programming and film distribution. Her books include Scala Cinema 1978-1993 (FAB Press, 2018) winner of the Kraszna-Krausz award for excellence in moving image book publication and the source of her co-directed feature documentary SCALA!!! (2023) which tells the story of the rise and fall of the world’s wildest cinema.
