Maggie Steed is our narrator at the world premiere of St Matthias - The Musical! exploring the extraordinary history of St Matthias Church in Stoke Newington - not in dusty old books, but in song.

On the watercress beds of the fields beneath, church architect and gothic revivalist William Butterfield builds his first London Church along the boundary of what was then known as Cut Throat Lane. Alongside local financier Robert Brett, who was concerned that Stoke Newington had become ‘a neighbourhood overrun with Dissent’, Brett raised the funds needed to save the souls of the area’s increasing population.

But what of the Dissenters? And organist William Monk? And two World Wars? The second of which almost finished the church for good.
