Dr Charles Knowles is a British surgeon, medical researcher and Professor of Surgery at Queen Mary University of London. He has spent much of his career studying medicine and surgery, but he also has a deeply personal connection to alcohol.

He developed alcohol dependence after discovering that drinking helped him manage anxiety, insecurity and emotional discomfort. After years of struggling with alcohol, he eventually achieved sobriety.

His book, Why We Drink Too Much, combines his scientific knowledge with his personal experience to explore why alcohol can become such a powerful coping mechanism—and why addiction isn't simply about a lack of willpower.

In short: he's a scientist who experienced alcohol dependence firsthand and then used both perspectives to understand why we drink and why stopping can be so difficult.
