About The Seagull

The Seagull at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is Anton Chekhov’s twentieth-century classic, translated by Rory Mullarkey and directed by Caroline Steinbeis. The play centres on an actress, her lover, her playwright son and an aspiring performer, set in a house by a lake where a play within a play leads into questions of art, ego and love.

Chekhov’s first of his four major plays, The Seagull is also inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Caroline Steinbeis and Rory Mullarkey return to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse after Three Sisters.
