About This Event

The Value of British Wool: Film Screening + Q&A will be held at Cockpit Deptford in London on Thursday 10 September from 5:00 pm. This event during London Textile Month features a screening and discussion with Nicci James for £6.13.

Join Nicci James during London Textile Month for a screening of a short film championing the value of British wool at the UNUSUWUL studio.

"People think wool is wool is wool but actually it's Shetland, it's Welsh Mule, it's Lincoln Longwool, it's so many different things"

Directed by Mairi Eyers, The Value of Britiish Wool follows knitwear designer and researcher Nicci James as she develops a new piece of work using rare and native breed wool yarns. This short film documents the process from sourcing the fleece to developing a final piece, featuring the people who handle the fibre at each stage including farmers, wool processors, spinning mills and manufacturers, highlighting both their individual challenges and new opportunities in working with UK native & rare breed wools as a local, abundant and underutilised resource.

The film will be followed by a short panel discussion with Nicci James and her collaborators, sharing further insights from UNUSUWUL's ongoing projects within circular fashion and textiles, as well as answering your burning questions about native British wool.

UNUSUWUL pieces will be on display throughout the evening for you to see and feel the difference that breed specific yarn makes.

Drinks, nibbles, networking and wool chats to continue after the sceening til 8pm.

About:

Nicci James is a knitwear designer, researcher at University of the Arts London and the knit specialist behind UNUSUWUL, research & development studio championing the diversity of wool fibres.

In partnership with British Wool, Southeast England Fibreshed, & University of the Arts London: UNUSUWUL has been examining how individual breed properties effect both the behaviour and performance of the textiles & products they become. Merging material science methodologies with design research and innovative manufacturing techniques, this funded research project explored how breed specific narratives could support more equitable supply chain partnerships and circular textile systems within the UK.
