History of the Muxima Pilgrimage The Muxima Pilgrimage began in 1833, centred around the revered Sanctuary of Our Lady of Muxima, built by the Portuguese in 1599 then rebuilt in 1641. Over time, the site became one of Angola’s most important Marian shrines, attracting believers seeking healing, blessings and spiritual renewal. The history of the settlement is mixed as Muxima was also a centre of the slave trade with a fort being built here to oversee it. On the other hand, generations of pilgrims have walked the same paths, prayed in the same chapel and carried the same hopes to this sacred place. What to Expect at the Muxima Pilgrimage The Muxima Pilgrimage bursts into life with processions, open-air Masses and heartfelt devotional singing that echoes across the riverbanks. Feel swept up in the energy as pilgrims walk together towards the sanctuary, carrying candles, flowers and personal items. Priests lead prayers throughout the day, and the atmosphere becomes especially powerful during the night vigil, when thousands gather under the stars for reflection and worship. Where does it take place? The pilgrimage centres around the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Muxima, the riverside esplanade and the surrounding village areas where pilgrims camp, pray and celebrate. The Kwanza River provides a beautiful backdrop to the spiritual activities. The pilgrimage is free. Join the main procession early in the morning, walking alongside other pilgrims towards the sanctuary. Pause at the riverbank to take in the view before joining the celebrations. Plan ahead as Muxima is a small place with a population of around 8,000. There is the Hotel Ritz in the village. Book ahead, well before the festival begins, or visit for the day from Luanda. What to do in Bengo Province There is the fort to see on the high point of land in Muxima. Bengo offers a wonderful mix of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Enjoy exploring the Kwanza River, where boat trips reveal lush landscapes and peaceful waters. The Kissama National Park lies nearby, giving visitors the chance to see elephants, antelopes and diverse birdlife. The historic town of Caxito, capital of the province, provides a glimpse into local life, with markets full of fresh produce and handmade crafts. Also, visit the beaches along the coast. There are over 25 of them. Caboledo is easily reached by road, to the west of Muxima, where warm sands and gentle waves create the perfect place to unwind after the pilgrimage. Flights to Luanda From London, fly via Lisbon or Addis Ababa to Luanda’s Quatro de Fevereiro Airport, usually departing from Heathrow. From New York, Miami and Los Angeles the quickest option is a connecting flight via Lisbon or São Paulo before continuing to Luanda. To reach Muxima from Luanda, travel by road, taking a car or minibus for the two-hour journey south along the Kwanza River.
