An evening with Professor Jo Millington from Millington Hingley learning about bloodstain pattern analysis! Do you encounter bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) in your day job but wish that you had a bit more of an understanding of what it is and how to get the most out of it? Join us for an evening to learn about the basics about bloodstains and the difference between spatter and splatter. As well as an introduction to BPA, there will be plenty time for a Q&A and so please bring your forensic-related questions for Jo. ABOUT PROFESSOR JO MILLINGTON Professor (Hon) Jo Millington Jo’s experience in forensic casework spans over 30 years, starting with Lothian & Borders Police laboratory (Edinburgh, Scotland) and then moving to the UK Forensic Science Service (FSS) Homicide division in London. She transferred from there to the Specialist Forensics Division of the Metropolitan Police Service, and then joined a small independent company to lead their biology team in delivering a wide portfolio of case review. Eight years ago she set up Millington Hingley Ltd (www.millingtonhingley.co.uk (https://url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/xSoeCXQLQsnjVLoSDiLLiWHu04?domain=millingtonhingley.co.uk/)) where she now works as an independent Forensic Consultant with various agencies, specialising in forensic biology, on behalf of the prosecution and defence. Over her career, Jo has collaborated with a wide range of practitioners across the criminal justice system and has given expert scientific evidence, including in many high-profile forensic investigations, in courts across the UK and abroad. Her specialism in Blood Pattern Analysis has developed since her formative training with Metro Dade Police, Miami in 1998 and in 2010 set up Spatter/ED (www.spattered.co.uk (https://url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/QsHKCZ8Y8tMArW9txtVViBE0Jl?domain=spattered.co.uk/)) to further develop the BPA training that she has been delivering to a broad spectrum of practitioners from all over the world. She is co-chair of the advisory board that advises the UK’s Forensic Science Regulator and her work recently led to the publication of the BPA Guidance. In 2026 Jo became the first non-Dutch scientist to be registered as a BPA expert with the Netherlands Register of Court Experts. Jo is on the Advisory Panel of Inside Justice (www.insidejustice.co.uk (https://url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/tltMC28x8tkWPDzCXC33i5Bim_?domain=insidejustice.co.uk/)), a charity that investigates alleged miscarriages of justice, and their work has been the subject of a series of documentaries - Conviction: Murder at the Station and Conviction: Murder in Suburbia. Jo is a visiting lecturer at several UK universities, including Kings College London and Academy of Forensic Medical Sciences on undergraduate and postgraduate programs and holds the honorary positions of Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University and Honorary Professor of Forensic Practice at UCL. She authored the chapter on BPA in the most recent edition of the textbook Crime Scene to Court: The Essentials of Forensic Science and is the resident Forensic Science Advisor on the long-running BBC show, Silent Witness.
