In this fun, beginner-friendly half-day masterclass, you’ll learn how medieval artists transformed ordinary letters into beautiful works of art using rich pigments, intricate details and gleaming gold leaf. Award-winning artist Sumayyah Eldin will guide you through the entire process, step by step. No drawing, painting or gilding experience is needed. Just bring your curiosity and get ready to paint, embellish and add plenty of glorious gold! Having previously taught this workshop in France, Sumayyah is now bringing the experience to Manchester for a very special small-group session in historic Didsbury. Meet your artist Sumayyah is the founder of The Creative Society Manchester, an award-winning creative organisation that has delivered more than 300 workshops and events. She has created artistic experiences for universities, heritage organisations, cultural institutions, councils and major businesses. Her teaching style is relaxed, encouraging and perfect for beginners who want to try something completely different. This masterclass is completely beginner-friendly. Your design will be prepared for you and Sumayyah will guide you through every stage, from painting the details to applying the gold leaf. What is included in the ticket price? Everything you need is included: specialist art materials, pigments, gold leaf, use of tools, individual artist guidance, tea, coffee, light refreshments and a frame to take home. What will I take home? You’ll leave with your own completed illuminated letter and a frame to display it in, ready to enjoy at home or give as a special handmade gift. Can I choose my own letter? Yes. You’ll be able to choose the initial you would like to create. Please let us know your preferred letter when booking so we can prepare your design in advance. Is this a small-group workshop? Yes. Places are intentionally limited so everyone receives plenty of friendly, individual guidance throughout the session. What should I wear? Please wear something comfortable that you don’t mind getting a little paint on. Medieval artists can occasionally get messy! Are refreshments included? Yes!
