Join IAN TROWELL for an enlightening discussion with accompanying exhibition celebrating the very first gigs Sex Pistols played outside of London (Northallerton, Scarborough, Middlesbrough, Lincoln and Barnsley - they played their first Manchester gig a few weeks later).

Ian's talk will embrace everyday life of 1976 and how not all gigs go down as myth-making history, even though in retrospect they are now seen as incredibly important.

Overview:

In May 1976 the Sex Pistols ventured out of London to play their first gigs outside of the capital. Choosing to play small venues in Yorkshire, these gigs slipped under the radar in comparison to the now-mythical performances at Manchester that followed in the subsequent months.

On the 50th anniversary of their gig in the North Yorkshire seaside town of Scarborough, the findings of a subcultural archaeological dig were presented with an exhibition and series of presentations and discussions. Starting from the low-key and mundane, the tremors of punk were mapped out...

About IAN TROWELL:

Ian Trowell is an independent researcher in music and subcultures. In 2023 he produced a monograph on Throbbing Gristle and has also published widely on the subject of post-war British fairgrounds. His research into subcultural fashion includes an exhibition at Nottingham Bonington Gallery and regular contributions to the SIG Newspaper.
