Romans, canals, railways… and Coronation Street. Join us for a walking tour: Manchester's Castlefield Date: Multiple (plus other dates - please see our tour calendar) Time: 10.30am - 12.30pm Location: We'll meet in the cafe (Department Coffee + Supplies) in the centre of Lower Campfield (entrance off Liverpool Road). Please arrive 10 minutes before the start. Any problems, please phone 0161 225 4000. Part of a series of architect-led walking tours that read Manchester’s evolution first-hand… routes that trace change from Roman and medieval beginnings, through canals, mills and railways, to the city’s post-industrial reinvention and it’s new skyscrapers. Using archival photos and maps alongside today’s streets, we’ll reveal what changed, why it changed, and what those decisions mean for people and place. Walking from market stalls to marble halls, we trace how trade, resilience, and reinvention have continually reshaped Manchester’s core. For further details, FAQs and other dates, please visit: https://www.here-then-now.tours Starting from Lower Campfield, we step back to Roman Manchester at the remains of the fort, tracing how this frontier settlement shaped the city’s earliest streets and routes. From there, we move into the canal basin, where warehouses, water and trade powered the Industrial Revolution and transformed a small town into an industrial city. The walk continues through the arrival of the railways, including the world’s first inter-city passenger station on Liverpool Road, before reaching the former Granada Studios site, once home to Coronation Street and now reborn as Factory International. Along the way, we’ll discuss regeneration, lost buildings, controversial infrastructure projects, and how entertainment left a lasting mark on the area. Led by a Manchester-born architect, this is an engaging, accessible tour focused on stories, places and people, not technical lectures. Expect hidden details, historic images, and a fresh perspective on a part of the city many people think they already know. The route forms a relaxed loop and finishes back at Lower Campfield.
