Martines and Mozart is a choral orchestral concert at the Hub Theatre at the Open University in Milton Keynes on 19 November 2026. The programme includes Marianna Martines’s Dixit Dominus and works by Mozart performed by the OU Choir. Admission to the event is free.
A choral orchestral concert including Martines's Dixit Dominus, some short pieces by Mozart and a Magnificat by little known Paulo Papini.
Although the music of Marianna Martines is little-known today she was at the hub of musicmaking in late eighteenth century Vienna. A pupil of Haydn, family friend of the poet and librettist Metastasio and keyboard duet partner of Mozart, she was the first woman to be admitted to the prestigious Accademia Filarmonia of Bologna. She submitted her setting for chorus, soloists and orchestra of Psalm 109, Dixit Dominus to the Academy in 1774 as proof of her mastery of modern galant and ancient ecclesiastical styles. By turns exuberant and charming, it stands the test of time and deserves to be more widely known.
The OU Choir’s Autumn concert also features several works by her younger contemporary WA Mozart, including Regina coeli K276 and his familiar Ave verum corpus K618. The programme is completed with a setting of the Magnificat by Paulo Papini, a contemporary and near neighbour of Palestrina, which has recently been transcribed by Dr Naomi Barker, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Music Department at The Open University. This will be only the second performance of this piece since the sixteenth century, and the first in a non-liturgical context.
The OU Choir is joined by the Cantoribus Ensemble in this concert, which is conducted by the choir's musical director, Bill Strang.
