From Collage to Clay with Emily Stubbs
Explore the journey from paper to pottery in this immersive two-day workshop. Through collage, printmaking, drawing and clay, you'll discover ways to develop layered compositions and translate them into richly decorated ceramic vessels. Combining surface design with handbuilding techniques, this course encourages experimentation, play and personal expression while creating unique forms full of texture, depth and character.
Day One: Gathering, Layering and Composition
We will begin by exploring collage as a tool for observation, composition and idea development. Using found imagery, drawing, handmade marks and printed elements, you'll create a collection of visual material inspired by your surroundings and interests. Through a series of exercises on paper and clay, you'll experiment with monoprinting, screen printing and other transfer techniques, learning how to build layered surfaces and develop a personal visual language. These compositions will then be translated onto clay slabs, creating a library of decorated surfaces ready for construction.
Day Two: From Surface to Form
On the second day, Emily will guide you through a range of slab-building techniques to transform your decorated clay surfaces into functional or sculptural vessels. Focusing on composition, placement and construction, you'll learn how to assemble forms that enhance and respond to the imagery and patterns you've created. Attention will be given to joining methods, edge details and finishing techniques, before adding further layers of print and surface decoration to complete your work.
Throughout the workshop, you'll gain insight into the use of underglazes, glazes and oxides, while developing confidence in combining two-dimensional design processes with three-dimensional ceramic making.
We will provide a veggie lunch both days.
Tea and coffee is available all day.
We provide all tools, clay, slips and equipment.
you can choose to either take your pot away to fire yourself or we can fire them here but they will need to be picked up when ready.
