Course content

The what, where, why, how and when of the Whin Sill. We will look at what a ‘sill’ is and how important the Great Whin Sill has been for geology. What is it made of, where do we find it, and how and when was it intruded.

The sill forms a significant feature in the landscape of northern England and has been used for the siting of defensive fortifications such as Hadrian’s Wall and several coastal castles. Economically, it has been quarried as a building stone and used for stone setts. It is the main constituent of tarmac and may find a use in carbon capture in the future.

Accessibility
