Join us for a fascinating day exploring some of the most remarkable ancient and heritage trees in the heart of the Scottish Borders.

This day-long guided minibus tour will take you to a selection of magnificent trees across the central Borders region, each with its own story, history, and ecological importance. Some of the trees are located on private land, making this a rare and special opportunity to visit trees not normally accessible to the public. Along the way, you’ll learn how these trees have shaped the landscape — and why they matter more than ever today.

The tour will be led by Borders Forest Trust, alongside Keith Knight, a leading expert in heritage and ancient trees, who will share his deep knowledge and insight throughout the day.

We’ll begin at 10:00am, meeting at the famous Jedburgh Elm in the town of Jedburgh, before setting off to visit a number of extraordinary trees across the region. Transport for the day is provided by minibus.

Please note that a reasonable degree of fitness is required, as access to the trees will involve walking on foot, sometimes over uneven ground. Some trees are located a five minute walk from the minibus, up a steady incline. One stile crossing is required.

The event is not suitable for dogs.

About our Guide, Keith:

Keith has had a life-long interest in natural history and especially in trees. Retirement has meant more time in the woods and he has been volunteering in various roles for the Woodland Trust for several years. His current focus is on Ancient and Veteran trees and he is now the co-lead verifier for Scotland for the Woodland Trust’s Ancient Tree Inventory. Adding and reviewing new records for this inventory has taken him to many hidden places and trees across Scotland.

Keith moved to the Scottish Borders over 10 years ago and has developed an extensive knowledge of the Heritage Trees of this area. He volunteers regularly with BFT helping to plant and maintain new trees for future generations.
