About This Event

Join a fascinating Waxcap Wander at the Havannah and Three Hills Nature Reserve in Newcastle on Thursday 5 November. This guided exploration, commencing at 11am, invites you to discover the vibrant world of waxcap fungi flourishing within the reserve's unique habitats. The event forms an integral part of a new local initiative dedicated to meticulously documenting the area's diverse fungal populations. Participants will have the chance to not only marvel at the striking colours of these fascinating organisms but also contribute valuable observations to this important biodiversity project. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and learn more about the often-overlooked kingdom of fungi. The cost for this enriching experience is £5.00 per person.

About this event

Join us in search of waxcaps - beautiful, colourful little fungi that are indicators of healthy, undisturbed grassland habitats. We’ll take our time exploring the sights and sounds of autumn, spotting some of the wonderful fungi that grow at Havannah Nature Reserve and recording key finds for NHSN’s new North East Waxcaps project.

Please bring weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear, along with snacks and/or a flask of something warm to drink if you wish.

This course is part of NHSN's North East Waxcaps project, which aims to map and protect the region's waxcap grasslands through citizen science. We'll show you how to identify waxcaps in the field and how to submit your sightings, so you can continue contributing to this exciting project long after the course has finished.

About the Event Lead

James works as Senior Naturalist at NHSN. Outside of work, he is a passionate wildlife recorder with a focus on botany and invertebrates. As a botanist, he is a joint BSBI Vice-County Recorder for North Northumberland and has a particular fondness for ferns, grasses and ancient woodland plants.
