This guided walk is a key component of an exciting new project dedicated to documenting the fungi found within our community. It's a wonderful opportunity for nature enthusiasts and budding mycologists alike to contribute to valuable scientific data while enjoying the autumnal countryside. The walk commences promptly at 10:00 AM, and the participation fee is a modest £5.00. Prepare for an enriching morning immersed in the fascinating world of fungi.

About this event

Join us in search of waxcaps - beautiful, colourful little fungi that are indicators of healthy, undisturbed grassland habitats. We’ll take our time exploring the sights and sounds of autumn, spotting some of the wonderful fungi that grow at Burradon and recording key finds for NHSN’s new North East Waxcaps project.

Please bring weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear, along with snacks and/or a flask of something warm to drink if you wish.

This course is part of NHSN's North East Waxcaps project, which aims to map and protect the region's waxcap grasslands through citizen science. We'll show you how to identify waxcaps in the field and how to submit your sightings, so you can continue contributing to this exciting project long after the course has finished.

About the Event Lead

James works as Senior Naturalist at NHSN. Outside of work, he is a passionate wildlife recorder with a focus on botany and invertebrates. As a botanist, he is a joint BSBI Vice-County Recorder for North Northumberland and has a particular fondness for ferns, grasses and ancient woodland plants.
