Unheard-of journeys - listening into outer space. A special selection from the UK International Audio Drama Festival, Canterbury.

RADIOPHONICx is a communal listening event that presents international radio art to a live audience. Together we listen to exciting and award-winning audio work from around the world. Experience thought-provoking audio drama, poetic sound pieces, experimental narratives and surrealist radio in a relaxed atmosphere. There will be sofas, but feel free to bring extra cushions. After listening there will be time to share our thoughts and discuss the work with the artists and curator. Each session will have a specific theme, exploring different radio art genres and styles.

Laika by Luuk Imhann from NOX, Netherlands, 19 min Dutch/Russian with English video subtitles

Laika is an original audio drama taking place in 1957, where loyal Soviet scientist Tatyana (Victoria Koblenko) speaks through the radio to Laika, the dog who has just been launched into orbit around the Earth in a rocket. While she tries to calm the dog, she fears that her days with her husband Yevgeny will also be numbered if Laika dies. Moreover, the dog's fate plants a seed of resistance against Khrushchev's regime. How is it that Laika has come to mean so much to her? She dreams of another world where she, Yevgeny and Laika will be all together.

Luuk Imhann is a Dutch novelist, playwright and director creating historical fiction about key moments in 20th century history. He teaches writing and lives in Amsterdam with his son. NOX is a Dutch audio collective by writer-director Luuk Imhann and composer-editor Sietse Damen. They produce audio drama to find hope in moments of darkness. Their work includes dramas about the atomic bomb in Japan (Nagasaki) or the curse of knowledge on humanity (This Fire).

Aurora by Chuse Fernandez, Spain, 23 min, Spanish with English video subtitles

Aurora is an experimental audio piece about the journey of the Aurora spacecraft in search of extraterrestrial life in deep space. Inspired by the text by the Spanish writer Juan Ramón Jiménez titled 'Espacio,' from which some paragraphs can be heard in the voice of the author himself. The narrative moves between reality and

imagination, inviting the listener to actively participate in building the story. The play combines different sound narratives —to demonstrate how voice, silence,

space, and environmental sounds can work together in a powerful and intimate storytelling experience.

Chuse Fernández is a Spanish radio producer, sound artist and educator based in Zaragoza. He is the driving force behind TEA FM, an award winning independent radio station internationally recognised for its work in radio art, and media education.Throughout his career Fernández has explored the expressive possibilities of audio using techniques such as binaural recording, documentary sound design, and artistic radio formats. He is a passionate teacher of audio and sound and collaborated on the European Synchromesh audio project by International Arts promoting radio as a powerful tool for creativity, cultural reflection, and social communication.

BOT 13 by Khosro Rasouli, Iran, 6 min, Persian with English subtitles

A patient awakes in a spaceship, confused and disorientated, only to discover that he has been in a coma for 20 years since November 2024. The nurse explains to him that the world has changed drastically; most of the Earth population has perished due to storms, global warming, flooding and micro plastics and they are now aboard a spaceship called BOT 13 heading to Mars. BOT13 won first prize in short form drama at the Uk International Audio drama festival in 2025

Khosro Rasouli is a writer, producer and journalist in radio and audio production from Iran. He attended training courses in radio feature production at the Deutschlandfunk and Deutsche Welle in 2005. His audio works have been invited to various European festivals and he won several awards in France and England.

Bowie in Siberia by Mamuka Magularia, Georgia, 3 min

50 years ago, in 1973, world famous artist David Bowie returned from a Japanese concert tour to Berlin. Afraid to fly, he took the train from the far eastern former USSR city Vladivostock back to Berlin. Nobody knew out there who Bowie was, not because of his incognito, but because of the iron curtain… Mamuka Magularia is a graphic designer and audio maker from Tbilisi, Georgia.

This work was created as part of the Synchromesh audio art residency and workshop in Tbilisi in 2023. It was selected for the UK International audio festival.
