Adam Sisman has spent half a lifetime writing biography, of subjects ranging from Wordsworth and Coleridge to John le Carré. He has written an award-winning study of the first modern biographer, James Boswell, and investigated the life of the extraordinary con man, Robert Peters– “more of a detective story than a conventional biography”, as Adam describes it. Among his other publications are three volumes of letters, and biographies of three popular historians, A.J.P. Taylor, Hugh Trevor-Roper, and (his most recent book) Asa Briggs. In conversation with Keith Jewitt, Adam reflects on a career studying the lives of others, and some of what he has learned in the process.

Adam Sisman is the author of Boswell’s Presumptuous Task, winner of the US National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography, and the biographer of John le Carré, A. J. P. Taylor and Hugh Trevor-Roper. Among his other works is The Professor and the Parson: A Story of Desire, Deceit and Defrocking. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and an Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews.
