Join ceramist Sam Dowling for an insight into his practice, exploring his use of self-sourced materials from the Cornish landscape
Join us for an evening with ceramist Sam Dowling as he offers a fascinating look into his practice, material research, and deep connection to the Cornish landscape.
Having recently graduated with 1st Class Honours in Ceramics from Cardiff School of Art & Design, Sam spent his degree rigorously examining the behaviour of self-sourced materials in ceramic practice. Developing a rich material vocabulary - which he now utilizes like a library - he has returned home to Cornwall to establish his studio and continue expanding his work with local geology and atmospheric firing.
During this talk, Sam will share the philosophy and process behind his work:
Working with the Land: How he self-sources, processes, and alchemically transforms Cornwall’s mineral-rich materials—including moorland granite, apple-wood ash, coastal slate, and beach sand—to give disinctive finishes that evoke an emotional sense of place.
Form & Technique: The rhythm of throwing on a Leach kick-wheel, the tactile surface textures achieved through press-moulded flasks, and the intentional distortion of soda-fired porcelain vessels that echo the rolling hills of the horizon.
Geology & Glaze: How raw, harvested materials integrally reflect the natural color palette and rich geology of Cornwall’s North Coast.
Whether you are a collector, artist/maker, or simply curious about raw materials and modern studio craft, this talk offers a rare glimpse into the journey of an exciting emerging talent grounded in local heritage.
Event Details:
Format: Artist Talk starting at 6.30pm followed by an informal Q&A. There will be time before and after the talk to view Sam's work on display as part of our current exhibition 'Elemental' with a paid bar on site for refreshments.
Admission: Free (RSVP required due to limited gallery capacity)
