A walk around Civil War Newark, the Queen's Sconce and the battlefield at Newark
To encourage interest in battlefield heritage, the Battlefields Trust and its partner organisations are arranging a series of battlefield walks in September 2026.
Kevin Winter will lead a Civil War tour of Newark and its 1644 battlefield. Explore some of the places that were at the heart of key events, ending at the Queens Sconce.
The tour will begin at the bandstand in Newark Castle (Castle Gate, Newark NG24 1BG), where the reason Newark became known as 'The Key to the North' can be seen. We will then visit some of the buildings that played a part in the towns Civil War history and remain standing. We will explore some of the characters, such as Baron Dohna, Hercules Clay and Prince Rupert who were significant players in Civil War Newark. After making our way around the town and visiting the site of the battle of Newark on 21 March 1644, we will head back to the castle and then along the river towards the Queen's Sconce. This fortification, built to defend the town from Parliamentarian attack is the best-preserved 17th century earthwork in the country.
Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or carer
Tickets are free but limited to 30 people.
If you enjoy the walk and would like to make a small donation to help the work of the Battlefields Trust, feel free to do so.
