About This Event

A reading group focusing on D.H. Lawrence’s short story 'Return to Bestwood' meets on 10 September 2026. The session is led by Dr David Amos and John Pateman at The D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum in Nottingham. Entry is free.

Led by Dr David Amos and John Pateman, this reading group will examine D.H. Lawrence’s short story, 'Return to Bestwood'.

Lawrence visited Eastwood for the last time in September 1926 at a time when the Miner’s Lockout was starting to collapse and the return to work was gathering momentum.

The reading group will discuss aspects of the text in relation to the General Strike and Miners Lockout in general, and what followed after Lawrence’s visit, reverberations from which still exist in the complicated and contested history of the Nottinghamshire miners’.

Attendees have the option to visit the museum before the event starts.
