About This Event

Join us for a screening of 'Burkitt', exploring medical discovery, cancer and lived experience, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker. Join us for a special screening of Burkitt, an award-winning documentary exploring the remarkable life and legacy of Irish surgeon Denis Burkitt, whose observations while working in Uganda led to the discovery of the childhood cancer that would become known as Burkitt’s lymphoma. Told through the deeply personal perspective of filmmaker Éanna Mac Cana, a survivor of Burkitt’s lymphoma, the film brings together Mac Cana’s own experiences of cancer treatment with Denis Burkitt’s extraordinary archive of photographs and films from sub-Saharan Africa. Moving between personal experience, medical history and scientific discovery, Burkitt also raises thought-provoking questions about trauma, colonialism, the ethics of medical research and the role of creativity in understanding our experiences. Following the screening, filmmaker Éanna Mac Cana will join us for a Q&A, offering a unique opportunity to hear about the making of the documentary and the stories and questions behind the film. All welcome!
