Ten Films, Twenty Years of Social Change

Abstract

This talk explores how Peruvian society has been represented and questioned through cinema over the past twenty years. Using ten Peruvian films as case studies, Gerardo Cailloma will examine how filmmakers have portrayed the country’s social and cultural transformations, including inequality, migration, family, gender, race, class, memory, violence, identity and the tensions between rural and urban Peru.

Rather than presenting cinema simply as a reflection of society, the discussion will consider how films construct particular ways of seeing Peru and its diverse communities. The ten films provide different perspectives on contemporary Peruvian life, revealing both persistent social divisions and changing identities. The presentation will last approximately 30 minutes, followed by an open discussion and questions to the speaker.

Gerardo Cailloma is a Peruvian scholar, educator, and cultural researcher whose academic work focuses on Peruvian society, culture, and their representation through film and other forms of visual media. He has built an extensive career in teaching, research, and cultural analysis, with particular expertise in Peruvian cinema and how social, political, and cultural transformations are reflected on screen. His work combines academic research with a strong engagement with contemporary Peruvian culture, making his contribution especially relevant to students and scholars interested in Latin American studies, Hispanic culture, cinema and society. Through his research and academic presentations, Cailloma offers critical perspectives on Peru’s changing social landscape and cinema's role in representing diverse identities, experiences, and realities.
