About This Event

What causes climate change? is a workshop set for 3 November 2026 at St Cross College in Oxford. The event aims to explore the physical processes and human history behind climate change, combining perspectives from STEM and Humanities. Attendance is free.

Bringing together STEM and Humanities perspectives, this event will explore both the physical processes and the human history driving change

“What is causing our climate to change – and how did we get here? Bringing together complementary STEM and Humanities perspectives, this event will explore both the physical processes and the long human history driving climate change. The discussion will consider how we know that increasing carbon dioxide levels raises global temperatures, our dependence on fossil fuels and the need to reach Net Zero, as well as how we might understand, and so begin to tackle, the deep-rooted ideas and systems that make it hard to change direction. By putting together two radically different ways of understanding our predicament, this conversation will also consider how interdisciplinary collaborations might engender fresh approaches and new ways to communicate.”

This event will be led by St Cross Fellow Professor Helen Johnson with Professor Amanda Power, as part of the college's themed programme this autumn.

Designed for a curious, non-specialist audience, the events will provide plenty of opportunity to put your own questions to our speakers.

Other events in the programme:

Tuesday 20 October 2026: How the Earth works

Tuesday 17 November: The race for critical metals: is there a better way?

Tuesday 1 December: Should humans move to the Moon?
