About This Event

An SFA course for those aged 16 years or older will be held at North Inch Community Campus in Edinburgh on January 6th 2027. It covers communication through games and common coaching challenges free of charge.

Introduction to Coaching (16years +) Course Information

The Introduction to Coaching course is for new coaches aged 16+ before progressing into a specific pathway such as Children’s, Main (Youth/Adult), or Goalkeeping.

Course Aims

This course will help you develop a basic understanding of:

The Scottish FA coach education pathway and your learning journey

Effective communication and player interaction

The key principles of a games-based approach to player development

The role of the coach within the coaching process

How to solve common coaching challenges

What You’ll Learn

The course includes a mix of theory and practical learning:

Theory: Introduction to Coaching, benefits of a games-based approach, and challenges faced by coaches

Practical: Introductory activities, small-sided games, and training games

LEAD Sport Programme

This course forms part of the LEAD Sport (Leadership, Employability and Development in Sport) programme for young people in Perth and Kinross.

Supported by the Gannochy Trust, the programme offers opportunities for pupils to gain introductory coaching and leadership qualifications while developing key life skills such as communication, confidence, and teamwork.

Participants are encouraged to complete 12 hours of volunteering within a school or community sports setting. (This is not required for Aspiring Coaches.)

Your Active Schools Coordinator can support you in finding a suitable placement. These hours may also contribute towards awards such as the Saltire Award and Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Terms and Conditions

Eligibility

This course is supported by Perth and Kinross Education Services and is available only to pupils attending Perth and Kinross Council schools.

Registration Information

Information such as medical details, emergency contacts, and photo consent is collected during registration and must be completed accurately.

Supervision

The course is delivered by the Active Schools and Sports Development Team. Please note that school staff will not be present.

Travel Arrangements

Participants (or their parents/carers) are responsible for arranging transport to and from the venue.

Course Requirements

The course may include work to be completed before, during, and after the sessions. All required components must be completed to achieve the qualification.

If you have any additional support needs, please inform us in advance so that we can make appropriate arrangements.

You will receive confirmation of your place via email through the Eventbrite registration system.
