This thought-provoking talk by Dr Peggy Brunache, Lecturer in the History of Atlantic Slavery at the University of Glasgow, will explore how history is remembered, interpreted and shared. Through exploration of chattel slavery and Perthshire’s connections to the transatlantic slave economy, Peggy will discuss how the experiences of enslaved people have been represented, and often overlooked, in historical narratives. The discussion will examine what histories we choose to remember and why, our understanding of slavery and the ways in which Scotland, including Perthshire, benefitted from the trafficking and exploitation of people. Through stories of resistance, resilience and hope, Peggy will reflect on how we honour the lives and legacies of those who endured enslavement. Exploring themes of historical memory, cultural legacy and representation, Peggy will also examine how language has been used to describe the food and culinary traditions of enslaved people. What do these choices reveal about power, identity and the ways in which history is interpreted? Through these perspectives, this engaging talk will encourage audiences to reflect on Scotland’s connections to slavery and consider how these histories continue to shape our understanding of the past.
