Join us for an evening with The Caravan Gallery (https://thecaravangallery.photography/), featuring a talk exploring their photographic practice, followed by an audience Q&A with Karl Bailey from Pompey Darkroom.
Founded in 2000 by artists and photographers Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale, The Caravan Gallery is a socially engaged visual arts project and mobile exhibition space that celebrates the overlooked, absurd and unexpected aspects of everyday life across Britain and beyond.
Working with colour photography, the duo have spent more than 25 years documenting the quirks, contradictions and distinctive character of the places and people they encounter. Their extensive photographic archive captures everything from the laugh-out-loud funny to the tragicomic and confusing, exploring themes of local identity, unusual juxtapositions, independent enterprise and everyday creativity. Their work challenges familiar stereotypes and the polished imagery often used to represent places, inviting us to look again at the world around us.
Housed in a distinctive 1969 mustard-yellow caravan, the project was originally conceived as a temporary public artwork for Portsmouth's Millennium Bank Holiday celebrations. What began as a one-weekend commission has grown into a long-running project that brings contemporary art directly into public spaces and communities.
Join us to hear more about The Caravan Gallery's practice, the stories behind their work and the role of photography in documenting and celebrating everyday life. The evening will feature a talk by The Caravan Gallery, followed by a Q&A with Karl Bailey from Pompey Darkroom.
