About This Event

Plotting the history of Ashton Freehold takes place on 16 September at Ashton-on-Ribble in Preston, organised by Various.

Discover the surprising history of a Victorian suburb created in Ashton-on-Ribble by a freehold land society.

Ashton Freehold is a distinctive Victorian suburb built just outside Preston's boundaries as a completely new development. Behind it were some of Preston's aspirational shopkeepers and tradesmen keen to own a plot of land.

Discover the story of the challenges and opportunities they met, revealed by the evidence of the streets and buildings.

This walk will show how the estate has developed over the past 165 years, using the clues - and confusions - provided by the houses that survive.

The walk lasts up to 2 hours and covers about a mile of easy walking.
