A professional training session exploring Alexithymia and Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria is organised for qualified counsellors at Open House Church Hall in Ramsgate on 30 January 2027.
Professional training for qualified counsellors and therapists working with neurodivergent clients
Workshop Overview: Supporting Neurodivergent Clients in Therapeutic Practice
This evidence-based workshop is designed for Counsellors, Therapists, and Play Therapists who wish to deepen their understanding of neurodivergent clients and develop more inclusive, affirming approaches within their practice. Informed by Practice, current research and enriched by lived experience, the session integrates both professional and autistic perspectives.
While neurodivergence encompasses a broad spectrum, this workshop will primarily focus on Autism and ADHD. We will explore the neurodiversity paradigm and take a critical look at the pervasive influence of the medical model, which often pathologises neurodivergent traits as deficits to be treated or cured. Instead, we promote an experience-sensitive and collaborative approach, grounded in respect and recognition of neurodivergent identities.
Key areas of focus include:
Autistic cognition and communication styles
Sensory processing differences
Trauma and its intersection with neurodivergence
Alexithymia and its therapeutic implications
Monotropism and the Double Empathy Problem
We will consider how these areas influence the therapeutic relationship and environment, and what it means to practice in a genuinely neuro-affirming way.
The afternoon session will include practical exploration of creative processes that can support neurodivergent clients in therapy, offering participants tools to enhance connection and engagement in a respectful and affirming way.
