The Exploring the Architecture of Georgian Reading walking tour is free to attend and takes place at Reading Town Hall on September 20th, 2026. The tour explores Reading's Georgian legacy and lasts for several hours.
An architectural tour of Reading’s Georgian legacy, starting at the Town Hall and circling around the town centre.
A walking tour of Reading's extensive Georgian architecture led by Dr Stephen Gage, Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Reading. Reading has over 400 listed buildings from the Georgian period, representing a substantial part of its built heritage.
Reading has a rich and often overlooked legacy of Georgian architecture, from early C18 houses on Castle Street and London Street, to the Town Hall Assembly Rooms of 1785, to the Royal Berkshire Hospital and Eldon Square in the 1830s. The early C19 expansion was especially remarkable, seen in the striking terraces ringing the old medieval centre along King’s Road, Queen’s Road, London Road, Castle Hill, Russell Street, and others. This walk will encompass an architectural tour of Reading’s Georgian legacy, starting at the Town Hall and circling around to the east, south and back to the town centre (approximately 4km route).
Your Guide: Dr Stephen Gage is a lecturer and BSc Programme Director at University of Reading School of Architecture. He is an architectural historian specialising in the architectural, urban and landscape histories of C19 and early C20 Britain and America.
