About This Event

A creative writing workshop led by local poet Jake Nathan will take place at Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury on 28 October 2026. Participants are invited to explore the historic site's past and craft their own stories inspired by its history. The session begins at 13:00 and is offered free of charge.

Explore Coalhouse Fort’s history and tell its stories in this creative writing workshop with local Poet Jake Nathan.

In this workshop, Coalhouse Fort’s long history will be sure to spark children’s imagination and creative writing skills. Suitable for children aged 6 to 11 years, and their parents, grandparents and carers, join Jake to find out about the Fort’s heritage and bring to life stories from the Fort’s past.

Jake will be leading workshops all day, with different time slots on offer for people to join in and help tell Coalhouse Fort’s stories.

All children must be accompanied by an adult and everyone must have a ticket.

This workshop is part of the ‘Reanimating Coalhouse Fort’ project, funded by the Heritage Fund.

Accessibility

This workshop will take place inside the Fort in a room on the first floor.

There is no stair-free access to this workshop. Regrettably, due to the age of the Fort, there isn’t a lift installed. Funding is being sought as part of planned restoration of the Fort, which, if successful, will enable a lift to be installed.

Entrance to the Fort interior is through a small gate with a raised step.

While there are no toilets in the Fort, there are toilets in the cafe just outside the gate, and all activities will take place while those toilets are open (10:00 – 15:15).

There is an accessible toilet in the toilet block – full info on dimensions here: https://www.accessable.co.uk/thurrock-council/access-guides/coalhouse-fort-park (note this includes info about Fort opening times which no longer apply, and handrails which are no longer in place). There is no Changing Places toilet on site.

Please bring your own drinking water - there is no tap in the Fort.
