About This Event

The Salisbury Museum is running a Collections Care Course at its premises in Salisbury on 15 October 2026. Participants will learn to create a Collection Care Plan for their museum's needs. The course is free to attend.

Session 1: Thursday 15 October, 10:00-12:30, online

Session 2: Thursday 22 October, 10:00-12:30, online

Session 3: Thursday 5 November, 10:00-12:30, online

Session 4: Thursday 12 November, 10:00-12:30, online

Session 5: Tuesday 17 November, 10:00-16:00, Salisbury Museum

This course is made up of four 2.5 hour online sessions and one full day in-person practical session to provide more comprehensive and detailed training on the care of collections. It will include:

The risks affecting museum collections

What materials and methods are suitable for use with museum collections (and where to obtain them)

How to assess the situation in your museum and decide on priorities

How to create a Collection Care Plan to address your museum’s needs

Practical ways to improve conditions for your collections

Discussions about specific issues

The final all day session will include practical training on safe handling, conditions checking and packing objects.

Delegates will receive a kit for their museum and a certificate.

Who should attend?

This session is suitable for anyone working in a museum (paid or volunteer) who wants to know how to look after and work with the collection and how to plan for its survival. No previous experience or training is necessary.

Delegates are welcome to bring specific questions and issues to the session. If possible they should read their museum’s Collection Care & Conservation Policy and Plan before the session.

About the trainer

Helena Jaeschke is an accredited conservator with a degree in archaeological conservation and more than 40 years’ experience working with museums and collections in the UK and overseas. She supports museums across the southwest with all aspects of caring for their collections and supporting environmental sustainability.

This course costs £95 per person. Attendees need to attend all five sessions (4 online, 1 in person). Once you have booked, you will be contacted through the details you have provided to pay for the course by invoice.
