About This Event

Public stargazing sessions are scheduled for the John Harper Observatories in Dalby Forest during autumn and winter months. These regular workshops run from 19:00 and take place at the Scarborough & Ryedale Astronomy venue. The event is listed as free to attend.

Our regular public stargazing at the John Harper Observatories in Dalby Forest held during the autumn and winter months.

Scarborough & Ryedale Astronomical Society hold regular public stargazing at the John Harper Observatories in Dalby Forest held during the autumn and winter months.

Come and see the stars, planets, nebulae and galaxies under one of the darkest skies in the country.

The site of the society observatories was awarded the Milky Way Class of the UK Dark Sky Discovery Award in January 2013 and is now part of the North Yorkshire Moors Dark Sky Reserve.

Please wrap up warm and bring along a torch (preferably with a red filter to preserve everyones night vision).

Please avoid shining white light torches near the observatories, during the event or at other’s faces, as it will take 20 minutes for eyes to readjust to the dark.

Also please take extra care in the car park.

IMPORTANT:

Should it be forecast for cloudy skies during the evening, we will be giving a talk in the courtyard outside the Visitor Centre as our usual indoor space is unavailable.

Please ensure you dress appropriately for the weather, as it can get cold after dark in the forest.

Unfortunately, if the weather is forecast for rain/snow/ice, as we have no indoor space available, this event will now be cancelled (ticketholders will be notified of any cancellations prior to the event).

Previously we would run a virtual tour of the night sky indoors if raining, but Forestry England now wish to charge £100+ for the use of a room for 90 minutes, every time we run a free event, which is clearly not sustainable for a charity running 1 event per month.

The Event itself is FREE however Forestry England parking charges still apply on exiting the forest – the charge is reduced to £3 for this event (QR code supplied at event).

1 ticket required PER PERSON attending, max 6 tickets per order. If you need more than 6, place a 2nd order for the remaining people.

No dogs allowed during the event.

Charitable donations welcomed in cash on the night or online via DonorCloud.

Suggested donation of £2 per adult and £1 per child.

Description supplied by the event organiser.
