This lecture complements the forthcoming Royal Academy exhibition 'Painting the French Riviera'

This lecture complements the forthcoming Royal Academy exhibition 'Painting the French Riviera' running October 2026 - January 2027. It explores the dramatic impact that the light and colour of the South of France had on the artists that flocked there. Our exploration will extend beyond the Riviera as we move across France's Mediterranean coast from Collioure to Nice. Matisse and Derain's summer sojourn of 1905 will be a particular focus. The works that they painted that summer earned them the disparaging epithet 'fauves' or 'wild beasts' as a result of their vibrant colours and expressive brushwork.
