'Money Talks: The basics that matter' is scheduled for 28 October 2026 at Boldrewood Innovation Campus in Southampton. This event will focus on essential money skills for young people, covering topics such as financial language, budgeting, saving, and investing.
Join us to unpack the money skills every young person needs - from the basics of financial language to budgeting, saving and investing.
Most of us were never properly taught how to manage money - yet by the time we turn 18, many of us are already making some of the biggest financial decisions of our lives. Recent research shows that only one in four young adults received any financial education in school, and in the absence of structured guidance, many are turning to social media influencers for advice.
Join us for a free, interactive half-day at the University of Southampton designed to give young people the money skills that actually matter. The morning begins with an engaging session on the basics of budgeting, saving and investing, where an audience poll and a Q&A wall will ensure the conversation is shaped by what you actually want to know. The session then hands over to members of the University of Southampton Finance & Investment Society, who will lead a hands-on investing simulation using real-world financial data in the Bloomberg Suite - one of the most exciting trading environments.
No prior knowledge needed.
This event is open to young people aged 15–18, who must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Places are limited so early booking is encouraged.
This event is part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2026. For more information please visit https://festivalofsocialscience.com (https://festivalofsocialscience.com).
