About This Event

The Southampton's Hidden History Walk will take place on 24 October 2026, starting at The Bargate. Participants will explore medieval wine vaults and learn about significant historical events, including the Mayflower, Titanic, and the city's role in WWII, as well as connections to Jane Austen.

Visit the medieval wine vaults and hear about the Mayflower and Titanic, an elegant spa town, the city’s role in WWII, and Jane Austen.

Explore the hidden history of Southampton – from the Romans to the Normans, to the city’s years as an elegant spa town, and on to the amazing part the city played in the Second World War as a military port and home to wartime industry. Visit the medieval walls and wine vaults, and hear the stories of Southampton’s most famous ships, including the Mayflower and the Titanic, along with tales of Southampton’s famous residents, such as novelist Jane Austen.

Meet our Heritage Guide (wearing red) at the Bargate, High Street, near the statues of the lions.
