In this session, we will explore and begin applying methods of studying social media texts.
Social media platforms host posts and comments containing all kinds of information about user values, ideas, and beliefs. In this START session, we will discuss different methods for collecting and interpreting online texts, and consider how to apply them from an ethical perspective. You will learn the basics of how to use the web-based software Voyant Tools, exploring the interpretative potential of word clouds, word context, and word collocations.
This session will be in the DH Lab (Room 2151), Parkes Building (65), Avenue Campus. There will be periods of supervised work on Voyant Tools, so please bring your own computer, or book one from Southampton Digital Humanities (https://bookings.soton.ac.uk/dhbooked/Web/dashboard.php) if you do not have one.
