About This Event

A talk titled "Kitty Atholl: A Duchess and Westminster's most surprising pioneer and rebel" will be held at Dagnall Street Baptist Church in St Albans on 3 November 2026. This discussion focuses on the life of a pioneering female politician who had unconventional views on women's suffrage and collaborated with diverse political groups. Tickets are available from free to £5.00.

A pioneering female politician who thought women didn’t need the vote; a conservative who shared platforms with communists; and much more!

A pioneering female politician who thought women didn’t need the vote; a conservative who shared platforms with communists; a shy pianist who travelled the world speaking for Spanish refugees: the formidable Duchess of Atholl was full of contradictions.

Born into an ancient Scottish family and married to a philandering duke, she rose above the constraints of class and convention. She stood with Spanish refugees and challenged fascism, visited war zones and campaigned with her political opponents, criticised tyrants and wrote her own political playbook.

Amy Gray has worked in and around politics for nearly twenty years and stood for election to Parliament twice. She couldn’t find the book she wanted to read about Kitty Atholl, so wrote it around the demands of the day job and two young children.

Join us for a compelling story of courage, conviction and a woman who refused to play by the rules.

This lecture will be available in person at Dagnall Street Baptist Church and also online via Zoom. Attendance is free to SAHAAS members; £5 for non-members.

Please click on the button above right to register. You will then receive confirmation of your registration by email return. Registration closes at 3.30pm on Tuesday 3 November.

All those registered will be emailed the Zoom joining instructions by 4pm on the day of the lecture. If you have not received this by 5pm, please contact us using the email address below. NB. If you are registering two or more members to attend via Zoom, and want each of them to receive the link in their own email inbox, these details need to be entered at registration.

It is important to note that SAHAAS operates hybrid talks relying on two volunteers who work very hard behind-the-scenes on the technology to ensure we can offer this service to those unable to attend at the church. Occasionally despite our best efforts technology works against us. There may be a delay in acknowledging an issue but this is only because we are working out how to resolve it.

If you have any questions, please email Imogen de la Bere via lectures.sahaas@gmail.com
