Suicide affects individuals, families, workplaces and communities across the UK. Many people experiencing suicidal thoughts do not openly share how they are feeling, making early recognition and compassionate intervention critically important.
Recognising & Responding to Suicidal Distress is a practical and engaging training programme designed to provide participants with the confidence, knowledge and skills needed to identify signs of suicidal distress, have supportive conversations and respond appropriately when someone may be at risk.
Delivered by Mental Health Nurse and Suicide Prevention Therapist Andy Noon, this course combines professional expertise, real world experience and practical application to ensure learners leave feeling more confident and prepared to support others.
This training is not about becoming a mental health professional. It is about recognising concern, responding with confidence and helping people access the support they need.
About the trainer - Andy Noon is a Mental Health Nurse, Suicide Prevention Therapist who has delivered over 800 therapy sessions to men in suicidal crisis. Andy is a Mental Health Specialist with both professional and lived experience of mental health challenges. He has extensive frontline experience supporting individuals experiencing emotional distress, mental health difficulties and suicidal crisis.
Drawing upon years of clinical practice, therapeutic intervention and suicide prevention work, Andy delivers training that is professional, relatable and grounded in real life experience.
His approach focuses on developing practical skills and confidence, enabling participants to respond effectively when someone may be experiencing suicidal distress.
Learners will develop the confidence to
• Understand suicide and its impact
• Recognise warning signs and suicide risk factors
• Challenge stigma, myths and misconceptions
• Build trust and rapport with someone in distress
• Have supportive and potentially life saving conversations
• Ask direct and compassionate questions about suicide
• Respond appropriately to disclosures of suicidal thoughts
• Create basic safety plans and support pathways
• Signpost individuals to appropriate help and support services

Many people experiencing suicidal thoughts will never directly ask for help.
