Join Stone Club for an evening of talks and films in The Engine Room, at The Exchange.

We’ll be joined by Rupert White, Lally MacBeth, Matthew Shaw, Tëan Roberts and Layan Harman for a series of film screenings and talks.

Rupert White is a recently retired doctor. He is editor of artcornwall.org and author of several books, which include Folk in Cornwall: Music and Musicians of the 60s revival, Magic and Modernism: Art from Cornwall in Context and Bride of Quietness: Ithell Colquhoun in Cornwall.

Teän Roberts and Layan Harman are an artist duo who have been working together since they met when studying on the RCA’s Contemporary Art Practice MA in 2022. Their notable collaborations include creating a giant interactive beehive for Tate Modern Tate Lates in 2023, residencies at Cyprus College of Art (2023) and Mawddach Residency (2024), before they moved back to Teän’s home in the Isles of Scilly and secured an Arts Council England project grant for the Scilly Labyrinths Project. Their film work has both screened at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square and most recently they have been invited to participate in the An Tobar/An Fenten artist exchange between Cornwall, Scilly, and Mull. The Scilly Labyrinths Project - and the subsequent film Vanishing Labyrinths of the Isles of Scilly - represent their most ambitious collaboration to date, bridging academic research, archival material, natural dying, photography, community consultation, archaeological survey and restoration, film, performance and pageantry, costume, curation, and much more. This public art project centred around the uniquely Scillonian practice of building pebble mazes near the islands’ coasts, which is a pre-20th century tradition unique in Britain. Delivered in partnership with the Isles of Scilly Museum and Cultural Centre, and supported by Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, it was simultaneously a community heritage and a fine arts project. Lally MacBeth is an artist, writer and curator based in Cornwall. Her work takes in history, folklore, performance, ritual and artifice – and the links between high and low culture. She is the founder of The Folk Archive and co-founder of Stone Club. She has written for Caught by the River, House and Garden, and Hellebore, appeared on BBC Radio 3, and programmed events for the Tate, the British Museum, and the ICA amongst others. The Lost Folk, published by Faber, is her first book. She is currently working on her second book.

Matthew Shaw is an artist, author and curator based in Cornwall. Matthew has written for Caught by the River, Resurgence & Ecologist, Permaculture magazine and The Great Outdoors magazine. Atmosphere of Mona, a book of poetry and photography, was published by Annwyn House in 2020. Matthew has worked on performances and art installations for a variety of places including Barbican, Charleston House, Bryn Celli Ddu, Barclodiad y Gawres, Glastonbury Festival, Sea Change Festival, and The Social. Collaborators include Brian Catling, Shirley Collins, Jimmy Cauty & Jem Finer, Mark Fry, The Pop Group, Jamie Reid, Richard Norris and Justin Robertson.
